The time is now over and I have completed my work placement with woven design company Wallace Sewell. I was based in the beautiful scenic countryside of Dorset with half of the partnership - Harriet Wallace-Jones.
My time with Harriet was a real learning curve. As well as working really hard as a team to prepear all the scarves to be delivered to their various destinations, Harriet also took the time to talk to us about a wide range of different aspects of the business, as well as technical weaving structures, colourways, hers and Emma's progression and development after they graduated, and where the business is leading them now. Harriet even spared the time to go through our portfolio's and give us guidance on what things we could improve on and possibilities on how we could develop our work for 3rd year.
Wallace Sewell design a year in advance, and they only produce collections for the Autumn/Winter - And so that is what my work involved preparing. As well as designing their own collections they are also very often asked to complete commissioned work too. Recently they had a brief to design seat covers for London public transport. They had to complete the project with four colours only whereas they are use to using up to eight colours in a colourway, therefore making it a difficult challenge. They have also been asked to design an exclusive collection of scarves for Anthropologie which is a really exciting venture for the business
You can find them at this years, well know craft fair Origin in Old Spitalfields Market London from 22-28 September 2011. http://www.originuk.org/exhibitor/wallace-sewell-0
Or simply check out there website, http://www.wallacesewell.com/
This for me really was a truly fantastic opportunity which has influenced me greatly.
Thank-you so much Harry for this wonderful experience! :)
